Finding Recipes
It is easy to find recipes on Chef's Journal.
Browse by clicking the 'Browse Recipes' tab at the bottom of the app's home page. Then use the spinner wheel to sort recipes by Cuisine or Category.
After sorting, tap 'Show Recipes' to the recipes that match your criteria. The results include the recipes you have created and those that were preloaded onto the app. Tap the name of the recipe you want and it will open.
TIP: The picture on the Main Screen is the recipe header picture of the last picture you worked on. Press the picture to go directly to the recipe.
Creating a New Recipe
To add recipes on Chef's Journal, tap the ‘New’ button on the bottom of the home screen. Enter the recipe's title (required) and then add the appropriate details, such as the type of cuisine (American, French, Italian, etc.), the category it falls under (salad, sauce, entree, etc.) and a few additional prep details.
You are now ready to start creating your recipe!
Adding Pictures or Voice Notes
To add pictures or voice notes, look for the small button (
for media) on the right side of each recipe element. Tap the
button and you will be given the option of adding a photo or audio file. You can add photos and voice notes throughout the recipe.
- To create a voice note, tap 'add audio' and a recording tool will open. Tap record and start talking. You can add a voice note of up to 60 seconds.
- To add a photo, tap 'add photo' and you will have a choice to take a new photo with the iPhone's camera or pick an existing photo from your library.
NOTE: For the recipe title section, you can only add photos.
Adding Ingredients, Steps and Notes
You can add new elements to your recipe at any time. You can even edit completed recipes. There is an edit button on the bottom of each recipe. Click on
to enter edit mode. To add an item to ingredients, steps or notes, press the green plus symbol.
- For ingredients, you can use a scroll wheel to add the quantity required and a description.
- To add a step, type in the text you want to use when the keyboard appears.
- To add a note, type in the text.
- You can also edit existing recipe elements. In edit mode, simply tap the element's text.
- To rearrange the order of the elements, press and hold the 'three bars' button on the right of each element. With your finger, drag the element into the order you prefer.
Sharing Recipes in Chef’s Journal Via Email or Facebook
Sharing recipes is what Chef's Journal is all about.
The first step is to set your preferences. Click on the 'prefs' button at the bottom of the home page to add your name and email.
To share a recipe, click on the arrow key at the bottom of each recipe page. You will be given three options:
- Email to a friend
- Add to shopping list
When you choose email, a list of your contacts appears. Click on the contact's email and the recipe will be sent automatically.
To post a recipe on Facebook, you will be prompted to log in to your account. When posting, you can add a note to the recipe for your friends to see, and then hit ‘post to profile.’
You can put the required ingredients for any recipe into your shopping list by hitting the ‘add to shopping list’ share tool. The recipe's ingredients (including quantities) will be added to your list, which can be found by tapping the 'shopping list' button at the bottom of the home page. The shopping list can be easily edited as well.
We encourage you to send the emails when you are connected to Wi-Fi. The recipe files are very large because of the pictures and voice files. Sending them via 3G in a busy location often results in dropped connections and your email will transmit properly.
We also recommend adding chefs-journal.com to your safe senders list, as recipes that you send to yourself can sometimes end up in junk mail because of HTML formatting.
